Famous psychologist Carl Gustav Jung popularized the term ‘Archetype’ in social psychology and cultural anthropology through his observations on the primitive models of human mind that transcends the immediate neighborhoods of human life. It is interesting to note that human mind can permeate the cultural identities of social life beyond the boundaries of an individual psyche. When we look at the emerging digital consciousness in our contemporary society through the Jungian lens, we can observe hidden but subtle archetype formations.

future

To understand the subtle processes of digital archetypes, we may need to pause a while and digest the nature of digital consciousness. It is inherent in digital lifestyles and aspirations. Human memory is an interesting specimen here. It has undergone substantial changes after the emergence of digital lifestyles.

Our memory tends to be more faster and disjointed such that we tend to remember immediate past more precise and clear compared to our distant past. A decade ago, we had vivid memories of the distant past but our recollections of the immediate past was not this precise and fine grained.

Our perception is another example. Many cultural theoreticians acknowledge that our contemporary society is more image centered and logo driven compared to previous times. Now let us examine the roots of digital archetypes in our emerging digital consciousness.

It is interesting to note that while our digital consciousness is more discrete and finite, our digital archetypes exhibit a generic pattern. When digital consciousness varies between Gen X, Y and Z, digital archetypes will be of common nature.

Our crowd like behavior in a digital experience and image centered memory are a few digital archetypes. We are embracing ‘digirati’ or digital lifestyle in an era when our society is exhibiting more crowd like behavior in every walk of life. Technology and fast pace of monetary exchange seems to influence this crowd formation. They appear to be the centripetal forces behind the crowd formation.

This crowding behavior is a natural response to the accelerating pace of social changes and upheaval. Not only business models, our political ideologies, governance models, and cultural values are undergoing rapid transformation. Our individual psyche is finding it difficult to define its unique existence in this flux of affairs.

When did human society witness similar rate of change?

It was during an era before the agrarian settlements and river valley civilizations. We were natural crowds during those times known as nomadic tribes. If we look at the cave inscriptions of those times, we can see that those were mostly images or pictures. We worshiped natural logos then. Now we worship technology driven logos.

Thus the digital archetypes of our times is a reflection of our distant nomadic life. It will be further more interesting to see how human society develops settlements in this rapidly varying digital landscape.

What do you feel about the term ‘digital transformation’ ? This was a topic emerged during the candid conversation with a friend of mine during the last Friday evening. Both of us stared at each other for a while. Then we went back to our thoughts.

Dombis_1687We tried not to get glued in any predefined thoughts, anecdotes or reviews on the term. It was an attempt to perceive the interiors and exteriors of the concept in terms of our own knowledge.

For me, the combination ‘digital + transformation’ was more than the sum of two words. Yes, it is beyond the simple application of digital tools to transform the enterprise.  I believed the concept of digital is more that the devices and tools that generate digital signals. It is a way to adapt to the needs of the current space and time.

For my friend, it was a method devised to modernize the enterprise to meet the contemporary needs of market or society. He added one more thought saying that it is an organic alignment to the needs of the current market and society.

Thus for both of us understood the need to adapt / align / reflect to the needs of the contemporary market and economy. Digital transformation is not an adaptation of predefined tools and processes, rather a conscious attempt to be in sync with the contemporary society and market. Then the natural question is whether the current society is digital?

Our current society is not yet fully digitized. Yet we embrace digital platforms and lifestyles like never before. We may need to traverse centuries further to be called fully digital society. May be we will never get fully digital as a new concept my disrupt the society in future. Hence digital transformation methods of today may turn obsolete when society enters new epochs.

Thus we need to realize that it is not digital tools and methods that drive the transformation, but the need to align with the contemporary society. It is an intuitive and conscious motive to be in tune with the times. Thus keeping our transformation methods consciously in perpetual beta and evolving phase is as important as digital adoption.

Digital transformation is an interesting business paradigm as well as a mathematical conjecture! You may see a lot of hidden dimensions and aspects if you visualize digital transformation a little bit in terms of mathematical physics.

DigitalTransformation_Pix

In mathematical parlance, we have heard of a lot of transformation operators such as Laplace transform, Fourier transform, fast Fourier transform etc. You may see digital transformation as one such operator for a while.

Let’s consider the current enterprise context as a state of business flux. Flux is an interesting term used to denote the collection of vectors varying in multiple dimensions. Hence business flux is an apt term to denote any enterprise in our times. Every enterprise is made of cultures, technology standards, business models and processes which has evolved at different points in time with different velocity and variance.

Digital transformation operator is applied to this business flux. What happens next?

Enterprises kick start their transformation journey when the beginning point is not well defined. How should we baseline this beginning? It is worth serious attention.

What is the nature of this business flux?

When you look at a business flux, you can see a few interesting patterns. Some of the projects, processes, cultural behaviors, technology standards etc may be antagonistic / divergent / inertial to the digital transformation trajectory, while others are coherent and convergent to the digital transformation operator . These divergent parameters need to normalized to the baseline. This digital normalization is an essential precursor to the digital transformation journey.

What happens in this normalization? The divergent elements will be undergoing a preliminary phase in which variations will be minimized and then passed to a filter. In this filter, these elements will be functionally connected to the business baseline.

Locating the digital inflection points in the enterprise is another essential prelude to digital transformation. They will become critical nodes to define the pathway towards digital transformation. We will cover this aspect in another article.

Clay

Rage in the flow

Becoming a cell

Abundant lights

Courting a torrent

Wind

Ripe for the rains

Nude and erring

Down south a maze

Spill

With a razor

Pain is on the rise

Coal is fed

Flames

Washed away

A River bed

Tinge

In the eyes

Pupil sunk

Down the nights

Lava

Lust and livid

Ghosts melt

Looping on

Worms

Whisking up and above

A cloud that breath

Echoes of a primal birth

Creativity, Poetry

Poetry is like any forms of art that constructs its own structure around the experiences. Poets undertake this task with an abstract sense of beauty. Communicative possibilities, whether verbal or vocal, has a definitive role in their aesthetics.

How will you know that a certain configuration of words produce a beautiful and communicative idea? It is derived from the extent to which you have absorbed an imminent reality, full of distortions and divergences.

Genuine poetry exist in the discontinuities of the social fabric. They demonstrate a strange vigor to go in search of those discontinuities. Earlier times, this was attributed to the unconscious nature of language and mind. In modern times, discontinuities in experience is becoming a conscious and objective reality with the immersive possibilities of an all invading, all penetrating capitalistic experience.

This trajectory and pursuit is most often a remarkable oddity in itself. They take words and expressions, align and realign them and mirror their mind towards the extreme possibilities of the construct and drive the readers in a state of absolute concentration or infinite divergence.

In any case, it is never an easy task mining your mind for words that reflect the currents and turbulence of this exterior world around us. Like how poets and poetry exist in the discontinuities of the society, a lot of discontinuities and dichotomies exist in the linguistic universe of a poet. Through these discontinuities, poetry generates new meanings and relationships. A good poet is aware of the rifts and tremors of his mind. He / she will be able to posit words in such a flux.

I don’t know why this word called ‘dispersion’

Lingers to my sick mind for a week from now

I had no connect or attachment to this coin

Neither have I showed any sort of disrespect

Even to the most dispersed thought of mine

Yet this word is clinging on to my inside out

What does it mean? My tenses. My vocals.

In search of clues, I disperse my bulging veins

Innermost to the fissures, edging out of the bugles

They search for a brighter answer, in between the miseries

Still, I know I persist a sense of globular dispersion

It is not easy to ride a cycle rikshaw

At least now I know

Years ago, I had a cycle rikshaw master

We were almost carried on his wings

If he were a bird of feathers

Burning and groaning, he had sinking eyes

The first day I met him, he smiled like one of us

Second day, he sang his own songs for us

In the wheels of time, he became silent

Perhaps more silent than I was

Yet we were ignorant about each other’s silence

Days robbed his smile, nights shrunk his shoulders

On a late evening, I saw him drunk with no rikshaw on his sides

Never I again, I was carried in his wings

Even today, I am sure those were my most muted days

Between you and me, the finer touch of things

Between you and me, the pale edge of life

Between you and me, the globular flow of light

Between you and me, the sheath of nothingness

Between you and me, the measure of similarities and differences

Between you and me, an infinitude of colors

Between you and me, a distilled glass of hours, minutes, seconds and finer things

Eyes, our eyes, you insist a world I see is always granular enough !

Dream

On the spur of this moment, art is like any frozen body

I feel furnished to the floor tiles

Souped up opinions spilling over my eyes

Sickening eyes rolling over my nerves

Some cobwebs and clots holding up the hashes

Intent to speak, my necks popped out of the chest

Head still toiling to rivet all those prodigal nerves back and forth

There is still a rhythm left in the ears, musing till the feet

Fishing on the blood, a wood pecker found solace in my spines

All is well, until the neck returns to its coiled self
